Tarzan

Let's be honest here. Animated Disney movies just haven't been the
same since the trio that made The Lion King passed away. While some of them
(Hercules and Mulan, in my opinion), have come close, none of the movies
since Simba's have been worth any time unless you're younger than 9, and you
don't know any better. Tarzan, while it wasn't bad, was no exception.
The character development was commendable. I especially enjoyed the
Jane character. Tarzan himself was a little too, well, "overdone", in my
opinion, but he overall met my approval. The professor was cute, and so were
the various gorilla, baboon, and elephant characters.
The animation, while passable, was not the best I've seen. I felt
the animators could have used a little more creativity. Tarzan especially
struck me as being a bit crude, in terms of illustration. As for the other
characters, the sailors were reminiscent of Pocahontas (which is not a
compliment), Jane and the professor were modern versions of Belle and Maurice
(from Beauty and the Beast) and the rainforest friends were glorified Jungle
Book copy-cats.
The songs were actually quite good. I was surprised at the slightly
new approach to the soundtrack : instead of standard "character randomly
breaks into song at a random part of the movie," Tarzan creators chose to use
the songs as a form of background narration. Other than the slight
repetitive nature of the songs, I was rather impressed.
Overall, this movie is good for kids, but not all that exciting for
adults. Hopefully, Toy Story 2 will have a bit more to offer for us older
Disney fans.
