Entrapment

I was totally psyched about seeing this movie. I admire both of the
stars (Catherine Zeta-Jones is cool, not to mention pretty... and Sean
Connery just kicks ass, so to speak) and the plot sounded pretty interesting.
Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. My main gripe with this movie was
not with the actors or the scriptwriter, but with the director. This movie
COULD have been awesome, but it was played wrong so that it just didn't work.
The basic plot is classic action with a little romance on the side :
Connery plays a legendary art theif, and Zeta-Jones plays an undercover
insurance agent posing as an aspiring art thief who seeks Connery's advice on
how to steal a priceless Chinese mask. He agrees to help her steal the mask
and along the way, they fall in love... yada yada yada... I won't give away
the entire movie in case anyone was actually planning to watch it despite my
low rating.
This COULD have made an AWESOME action flick, but instead the
director chose to emphasize the romance side of it. WHAT WAS HE THINKING? I
mean really, the kind of people who are interested in watching Connery (who
is STILL worshiped for his performances in James Bond movies, The Rock, etc.,
etc.) and Zeta-Jones (who wowed millions of sword-fight-loving-guys in The
Mask of Zorro) are more interested in seeing them running away from security
guards than in watching them kiss.
Overall, however, the movie was not ALL bad. If you're not
particuarly picky, and if you tend not to notice details in movies, then you
actually might enjoy this movie. I must admit, the plot itself deserves a
MUCH higher rating than I've given the movie: it had great unexpected twists
and ironies. The acting alone was also superior. I simply disagree with the
way the director chose to present this movie.
