The World is Not Enough

James Bond is back in the 19th James Bond movie. Pierce Brosnan returns to play James Bond along with Desmond Llewelyn (Q), Judi Dench (M) and Robbie Coltrane (Valentin Zukovsky). Added to the cast is Robert Carlyle (Renard), Sophie Marceau (Elektra King), Denise Richards (Christmas Jones) and John Cleese (R).

Elektra King is the heir to the fortune and oil business that her father owned. She was also kidnapped as a child and held for a $5,000,000 ransom. Her kidnapper was Renard. James Bond is assigned to protect her but he stumbles upon the plot to steal a nuclear warhead's plutonium core and use it in a catastrophic explosion. He meets nuclear physisist Christmas Jones at the site and she tags along to attempt at diffusing the bomb.

This film has the most problems posed to James Bond ever. Renard comes up again to strike agains the King family. The deal with Renard is he isn't a short guy, a powerful giant, a media giant with the tools to the world or a MI6 agent out to get Bond. He took a bullet to the head after the kidnapping of Elektra King from MI6 agent 006 Alec Trevalyan. The bullet destroyed his sense of touch and he feels no pain. The bullet will also kill him eventually so he has absolutely nothing to lose. Not to mention M gets kidnapped.

All in all, this one is a strong movie, but seems a level below Tomorrow Never Dies and much lower than GoldenEye. The cast is great, with the exception of Denise Richards who does NOT make a good physisist. She does fit the persona of a great Bond Girl, however. Unique situations including helicopters with rotating blades hanging fifteen feet below, a unarmed MI6 agent escaping four flying snowmobiles down a steep slope, high speed boat chase with a suicidal assassin and a fight aboard a flooding submarine.

The film relyed too much on one-line jokes commenting on R, Christmas and caviar. I must say that the final line in the movie is a classic. I look forward to the next Bond movies, Pierce Brosnan is the best James Bond beneath Sean Connery and they are a great way to have fun.
