Romeo Must Die

Who goes to a martial arts movie for a plot? Nobody. Who goes to a martial arts movie for...oh...martial arts? Hmm...that's quite a show of hands we got there huh? Now I'm sure you martial arts fans have seen American versions of Chinese films like Rumble in the Bronx or SuperCop. I'm sure many of you remember back in 1998 where a psychotic little Chinese guy wouldn't die in Lethal Weapon 4.

Well, that little guy is back, making another American film. This is definitly not the Chinese import Black Mask we saw last year. Jet Li seriously kicks ass. This movie is proof of it. In Romeo Must Die, he's faster and smarter than his competition. He even throws in time to play football with the other gang, and he kicks their asses then too.

What this movie defeated was the underlying failure in many other movies. Don't hire rappers as major roles in a movie. Aaliyah, played a very...interesting role. Of a daughter trying to escape her ties to the gang warfare in Oakland. (Why is it Chinese vs African-American's? I don't know much about Cali. Is that a neutral ground between LA and SF?) Anyways, she did a good job at making me believe she wasn't just a musician that was type cast. Although there was that one dance scene where she sings to Jet Li...hmmm...

All in all, what can I say? This movie kicks ass! I said it before, I'll say it again. The stunts are phenomenal, the plot is semi-involving, just don't hope too much. Just go to watch Jet Li beat some ass.
