Final Destination

Repeatedly, directors have tried to bring back dying genres of movies. All too cliche are the chick flicks and action movies. Recently, the genre of Horror has begun to push its way back into the scene. Most of the films are completely lengthy ways to kill off supporting cast members. A few films and sagas fit this description; Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Blair Witch Project all did fairly well at the box office. But there are some that are just too cheesy, too lame, too dumb to even pass the normal movie attender. Crap like The Bride of Chucky, Urban Legend, The Haunting, The House on Haunted Hill and Halloween H2O all fit this.

Can Final Destination beat that trend? Can it provide a chilling sense of fear without being entirely lame? In truth, yes and no.

Final Destination did two things when killing their supporting characters. They either killed them really slowly and twistedly, or they killed them in a split second. The lengthy scenes were very good, with microphones placed in the right place to make audiences jump at the lighting of a gas stove, the gentle sound of a razor at work and the hum of a computer. It did a stupendous job of keeping the audience captivated and on their toes, wondering how exactly is this person going to die. For one instance, the method was unexpected and sudden, yet the suspense built through postulating is incredibly intense. But for other scenes, the death was entirely too gruesome. Rather than not using objects that are expeted to be used, the director used each object individually. An interesting twist, but all too gruesome.

Finally, the quick deaths were just that. Boom, let's get rid of them. End of story. Splat, slice, etc.

The plot was something to be thought about. I mean, fighting death? Death has a pattern? Uh-huh...and just what happened to that creepy mortuary guy in the beginning? They better not make it into a sequel, because this movie won't go any higher than a B.
